Imagine
By Christine Livingston

Imagine never feeling good, when you know of no reason not to feel good.
Imagine feeling pain in multiple areas of your body for no apparent reason.
Imagine feeling like your verbal and motor skills are impaired when they were fine a minute ago.
Imagine feeling like you have missed sleep for a week when you have just gotten out of bed.
Imagine something going wrong with your body everyday, when you have done nothing out of the ordinary.
Imagine having uncontrollable shakes and tremors and shocks of pain run through you, and disappear as quickly as they came; leaving you awaiting their return.
Imaging having to live a "normal" life in society, yet knowing your abnormalities will mess that up for you anytime of any day.
Imagine striving to be the best Mother and Wife you could be and being left to feel useless many times over awaiting to feel normal again.
You have now imagined what it is like to be me. I live with Fibromyalgia.

Pain Scale for Fibromyalgia
By Paula

Please note: This is the pain level that is experienced AFTER taking the daily medication prescribed by your doctor.
0 Pain free.
1 Very minor annoyance - mild aches to some parts of the body. No pain medication needed.
2 Minor annoyance - dull aches to some parts of the body. No pain medication needed.
3 Annoying enough to be distracting - Over-the-counter pain relievers (such as Naproxen or topical treatments such as Arthritis Pain relieving rubs) take care of it.
4 Can be ignored if you are really involved in your work, but still distracting. Over-the-counter pain relievers remove pain for 3-4 hours.
5 Can't be ignored for more than 30 minutes - Over-the-counter pain relievers help somewhat (bring pain level from 5 to a 3 or 4) with pain for 3-4 hours.
6 Can't be ignored for any length of time but you can still go to work and participate in social activities. Stronger painkillers (such as Ultram) relieve pain for 3-4 hours.
7 Makes it difficult to concentrate, interferes with sleep. You can still function with effort. Stronger painkillers (such as Ultram) are only partially effective. (Stronger pain killers bring pain from a 7 to a 4-6 level.)
8 Physical activity severely limited. You can read and converse with effort. Stronger painkillers (such as Ultram) are not effective. (Narcotic painkillers do bring this pain down to a level 3 or lower level.)
9 Non functional for all practical purposes. Cannot concentrate. Physical activity halted. Panic sets in. (Narcotic painkillers bring the pain level down from 9 to the 4-6 level.)
10 Totally non-functional. Unable to speak. Crying out or moaning uncontrollably - near delirium.

In a nutshell:
"Fibromyalgia is a debilitating chronic syndrome causing pain, stiffness, and tenderness of the muscles, tendons, and joints. Fibromyalgia is also characterized by restless sleep, awakening feeling tired, fatigue, anxiety, and depression. The nature of fibromyalgia is not well understood, and there is no cure, though it can be managed. It is not contagious, and recent studies suggest that people with fibromyalgia may be genetically predisposed."

"Remember how you felt the last time you had the flu? That's how somebody with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia feels on a good day. Imagine running the 26.2 miles of a marathon before you start your day and you can imagine the 24/7 reality of somebody with these disabling conditions. My disabling chronic illness is more real than your imaginary medical expertise. Unless you have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia, you can't begin to know what "being tired" is all about."

Fibromyalgia is real, unlike some tv shows and other sources imply. My mom has it, I have it, approximately 2 percent of the US population have fibromyalgia. It's time people learn what it is.
